{"id":706,"date":"2015-09-24T08:03:08","date_gmt":"2015-09-24T12:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/?p=706"},"modified":"2022-01-03T20:01:10","modified_gmt":"2022-01-04T01:01:10","slug":"10-continous-delivery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/10-continous-delivery\/","title":{"rendered":"#10 Continous Delivery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Open Source Load Testing presentation\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/richardfriedman\/open-source-load-testing\">http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/richardfriedman\/open-source-load-testing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps in a perfect world, every time code is submitted and reviewed, a <a href=\"https:\/\/jenkins-ci.org\/\">Jenkins<\/a>\u00a0job kicks off a load test against your specific change. \u00a0However, in reality,\u00a0this has quite a few issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Too early.<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0Load testing too early in your process is noise<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Time.<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0Realistically, most projects are not scoped with time for this<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Scope. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Changing a readme file should not generate a load test<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For me, I have found a set of reasons different than supporting a continuous software development lifecycle to integrate\u00a0load testing\u00a0with my continuous delivery\u00a0tools.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Faster iteration. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Remember, kicking off a load test takes time, having a location that gives you single click to kick off a load tests saves time<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Master Location of Data.<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0You can configure how many previous runs of your job for Jenkins\u00a0to hold on to, now you have one simple place to see your results.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Trend Lines. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Tools could aggregate results from job to job and show you a trend line of your results.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Recorded Tests is work done.<\/strong> <\/em>\u00a0Not sure the bullet represents the intention, but it is a quicker way for your team members to find what\u00a0tests have been built already.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Agile Development Process. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>And if you do want to integrate with your SDLC, it will be there for you. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexanderpodelko.com\/\">Alexander Podelko<\/a> covers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexanderpodelko.com\/docs\/AgilePerfTesting_15_Nov_2011.pdf\">Agile Performance Testing<\/a> in detail and also opens up the idea of Unit Performance Testing. \u00a0He has covered load testing from so many aspects, his perspective on the topic is always valuable.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Bonus: Multiple tools. \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>With Jenkins\u00a0you could run a Selenium functional and JMeter load test within the same build, keeping results and workflow together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am suggesting you integrate with CD tools, but not always with the purpose of a more iterative process.
