In this post, I will talk about API Load Testing with cURL and RedLine13.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7068  aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/cURL.png\" alt=\"API Load Testing with cURL\" width=\"137\" height=\"41\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/cURL.png 410w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/cURL-300x90.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 137px) 100vw, 137px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>SeLoger faces many challenges when performing load tests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many websites<\/li>\n<li>Many sprint durations<\/li>\n<li>Small performance team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But fortunately to achieve our goals we have lots of motivated people.<\/p>\n<p>This process is possible thanks to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RedLine13 implemented some of our feature requests<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ubikloadpack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ubik Load Pack<\/a> implemented Import from cURL feature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Special thanks to Philippe Mouawad who improved \u201cImport from cURL\u201d feature after a discussion.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7041-_gxkxvql065is\"><\/a>Step1 and only once: Configure RedLine13<\/h3>\n<p>The first step is to configure RedLine13 to be allowed to use AWS account.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7042\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-6.png\" alt=\"First step for API Load Testing with cURL and RedLine13\" width=\"916\" height=\"716\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-6.png 916w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-6-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-6-768x600.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 916px) 100vw, 916px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At SeLoger we use <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudcustodian.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cloud Custodian<\/a> to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check AWS resources tag\/naming compliance<\/li>\n<li>Turning-off resources not used at night<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It means that if an EC2 instance doesn&#8217;t have the expected tags, Custodian shuts it down.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily RedLine13 allows us to set enough tags in our EC2 injectors to avoid it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"611\" height=\"579\" class=\"wp-image-7043\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-7.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-7.png 611w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-7-300x284.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 611px) 100vw, 611px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last important configuration is to add some plugins.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, JMeter Report which allows us to have the desired granularity in JMeter Reporting Dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>More information on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/advanced-load-testing-granularity\/\">blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7044\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-8.png\"><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all..<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7041-_vfgdvhqib06t\"><\/a>Step2: Script the test case in Apache JMeter<\/h3>\n<p>I will work with a developer during this step to script the test case quickly and share best practices with him.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s time to script our test case and we need to be as productive as possible to proceed with the execution and analysis of our tests.<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways to write scripts in JMeter, but the fastest in our case is to use \u201cImport from cURL\u201d feature (in Apache JMeter 5.2 preferably).<\/p>\n<p>I am asking the developer where I can find the swagger of the API.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"606\" height=\"764\" class=\"wp-image-7045\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-9.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-9.png 606w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-9-238x300.png 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here we will script only one API endpoint (but you can add more).<\/p>\n<p>This API allows us to get details from a real estate identifier.<\/p>\n<p>We will get the cURL command from Swagger.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7046\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-10.png\"><\/p>\n<p>We can finally start JMeter.<\/p>\n<p>Go to Tools -&gt; Import from cURL and paste the cURL command line from Swagger.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7047\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-11.png\" alt=\"Import from cURL for API Load Testing with cURL and RedLine13\" width=\"837\" height=\"592\"><\/p>\n<p>Our script is generated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1313\" height=\"420\" class=\"wp-image-7048\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-12.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-12.png 1313w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-12-300x96.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-12-1024x328.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-12-768x246.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1313px) 100vw, 1313px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And like we can see there are JMeter property function (__P()) in scripts. It allows us to modify these options without modifying our script when we execute our script.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7049\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-13.png\"><\/p>\n<p>We can execute this script without modification, but we will add some more best practices to improve it.<\/p>\n<p>We will start by variabilizing the identifier of the real estate to have a more realistic script.<\/p>\n<p>To do it we will put all our real estate identifiers in a CSV file and add a \u201cCSV Data Set Config\u201d to our script.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7050\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-14.png\"><\/p>\n<p>And use it in our \u201cHTTP Request\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"902\" height=\"381\" class=\"wp-image-7051\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-15.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-15.png 902w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-15-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-15-768x324.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 902px) 100vw, 902px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next step, add an assertion to validate the response with \u201cJSON JMESPath Assertion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7052\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-16.png\"><\/p>\n<p>To allow us to control the throughput we can add a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jmeter.apache.org\/usermanual\/component_reference.html#Precise_Throughput_Timer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Precise Throughput Timer<\/a>\u201d or a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jmeter.apache.org\/usermanual\/component_reference.html#Constant_Throughput_Timer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Constant Throughput Timer<\/a>\u201d or a plugin from <a href=\"https:\/\/jmeter-plugins.org\/\">JMeter plugins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To have the easiest solution we will use a Constant Throughput Timer and __P function.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"933\" height=\"216\" class=\"wp-image-7053\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-17.png\" https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-17-768x178.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 933px) 100vw, 933px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To finish our script we will use __P to have an independent environment script.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7054\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-18.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Our script is ready, it\u2019s time to switch to RedLine13.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7041-_cb5vruipyb2b\"><\/a>Step3: Execute the load test from RedLine13<\/h3>\n<p>I still continue to work with a developer in this step.<\/p>\n<p>Because RedLine13 injectors are in our AWS account, it\u2019s easy to load test an internal API because the network is already configured.<\/p>\n<p>This is great, because we want to test an internal API.<\/p>\n<p>We import our JMeter script into RedLine13 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/Service\">Start a Load Test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7055\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-19.png\" alt=\"API Load Testing with cURL and RedLine13\" width=\"1011\" height=\"768\"><\/p>\n<p>Automatically RedLine13 will detect all the properties defined in our scrip with the __P() function.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"993\" height=\"221\" class=\"wp-image-7056\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-20.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-20.png 993w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-20-300x67.png 300w, https:\/\/www.redline13.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-20-768x171.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 993px) 100vw, 993px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here we can modify all parameters we want (for example if we have used a different environment for scripting, we can change the host parameter).<\/p>\n<p>The last thing to do before executing the test is to modify the granularity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7057\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-21.png\"><\/p>\n<p>We can execute our load test and follow the progress with the RedLine13 realtime dashboards.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the load test I analyze the results with the \u201cApache JMeter Dashboard Report\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"998\" height=\"421\"><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7041-_5q19dnn4an7l\"><\/a>Step4: Pass the responsibility to the feature team<\/h3>\n<p>To improve performance culture and allow the performance team to help other teams, it\u2019s time to pass the responsibility to the team.<\/p>\n<p>No need for advanced knowledge of scripting and\/or preparation of an injection environment, now the developer can just clone the test.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1004\" height=\"164\" class=\"wp-image-7059\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1004px) 100vw, 1004px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Modify the duration, throughput, host, etc. in the \u201cAdvanced JMeter Test Options\u201d -&gt; \u201cOption String\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7060\" src=\"http:\/\/54.161.25.214\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/word-image-24.png\"><\/p>\n<p>And execute the load test.<\/p>\n<p>Of course the performance team is still available to analyze the results.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7041-_q2a0vdr1qech\"><\/a>What next<\/h3>\n<p>We are still working on it, but the next will be to automate some load test in our CI\/CD pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>It will allow us to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Execute more tests<\/li>\n<li>Have the quickest feedback<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>RedLine13 and its API will help us to reach this new stage
